The Hope of the Bride of Christ

In Genesis 24 we have a picture of God the Father sending a servant to find a bride for His Son. Abraham is looking for a bride for his son, Isaac and he sends Eliezar his most trusted servant.

Eliezar’s name means “God of help” and shares a Hebrew root with the descriptor used when Adam was searching for a helpmate, but that is a story for another time.

Eliezar is sent bearing gifts that he might have credibility in his search rather than just someone claiming to represent Abraham. These gifts were of great value.

This is how the Lord sends us to reach a lost and dying world, bearing gifts of the Holy Spirit, because there are many who claim to represent truth, there are many religions in this world that claim to have a path to God.

As we go forth to proclaim the good news, we bring the good things from the household of God. In the midst of a lost and hurting world, we have the goods that people need. What are these good things of our Master’s house? They are acts of loving-kindness, forgiveness, wholeness, peace, and that most precious of all commodities: hope.

A dentist or a doctor can use their training to help others in the name of Jesus. A construction worker can help build homes for the homeless and we can all work to get food to the hungry, visit the sick and visit the prisoner. There is much work to do to bring a spotless bride to Jesus Christ.

Just as Isaac waited on Eliezar to bring his bride, our Lord waits on us to use the gifts we have been given by Him, namely the fruit of the Spirit to present His beloved to Him.
