Promoting a Peaceful and Strong Marriage

Believers in Jesus Christ have an obligation to honor marriage, but more than that they are to promote peace and strength in a marriage not division and strife. One place to look for an example is to the Lord Himself in the book of Genesis.

When the Lord comes to visit Abraham who is recovering from his circumcision He hears the thoughts of Abraham’s wife Sarah, when she laughs at the idea of having a child in her old age.

She thinks to her self, “After I have become old, shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?”

When God asks Abraham why his wife would laugh, He only reveals that she said, ‘Shall I indeed bear a child, when I am so old?’ Leaving out that she referred to Abraham the way that she did.

The discussion of Abraham and Sarah having a child could continue without Abraham being embarrassed by his wife’s thought and that is what we should learn from such actions by the Lord.

If it is possible to create marital harmony, if it is possible to strengthen a marriage rather than weaken it, that is what we should do. There is no greater relationship created by God than that between a husband and wife.

Sure we are imperfect and can and will hurt each other from time to time, but we don’t need help in hurting each other, we need help to be stronger in our marriage.

We need to be built up by other Christians so that our communities are stronger and so are our children. Within the church we have forgotten a basic truth; strong churches are built by strong families and strong families are build by strong marriages.

Let us imitate the Lord and build strong marriages.
