Fifty Shades of Grey Might Beat Passion of the Christ at the Box Office

Passion of the Christ

Fifty Shades of Grey seems to be on track to have a record February opening weekend.

Could a reportedly poorly made excuse for soft porn really beat the Passion of the Christ at the box office? If initial reports are true that could be the case.

The erotica film is said to have earned over $30 million dollars on Friday and if couples celebrate Valentine’s Day weekend with some cinematic bondage laden adultery then it is projected to earn a record breaking $76 million dollars.

If these estimates are accurate the glorified smut film could out do 2010’s Garry Marshall’s “Valentine’s Day” opened to $63.1 million and maybe the Mel Gibson-directed “The Passion of the Christ” which took in $83.8 million over its opening weekend.

50-shades-of-grey“Fifty Shades of Grey,” based on E.L. James’ bestselling romance novel, carries a fairly modest $40 million production budget. The film is directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson and stars Jamie Dornan as an enigmatic bondage-loving billionaire who falls for Dakota Johnson’s sexually inexperienced college student.

Should we be surprised that more people will go to see a bondage sex movie than went to see a film about the Lord? I guess not.
